October News!

The last couple of months have been  busy and productive ones for GainesvilleSORBA.  Thanks to SORBA, we’ve gotten our old weathered trailhead sign replaced with a weather-resistant one. Our goal is to have a trail system with signage that pleasant and helpful!

SORBA Pro Trails has also taken on revamping our trail entrance. Already completed is a reroute on the old Connector exit trail so that it compliments our beginner Tortoise Trail. This gives the park a complete beginner loop that new riders and young riders can enjoy as they hone their skills.

The Flying Squirrel Trail opening celebration was held on National Public Lands Day, Saturday September 27th! We had a great turnout as many came to celebrate with a ribbon-cutting and cookout. Connie Ringger, chapter member and member of the park commission, was on-hand to do the honors of cutting the ribbon. Also debuting was some of the new signs and “you are here” kiosks that will help prevent confusion for new riders! More signs will be put up over the next few weeks. The final signs will go up once Copperhead Gap Trail is completed.

Speaking of, we had our first work party for the Copperhead Gap Trail on September 13th and I’m pleased to say we had a lot of new faces! As more people visit Chicopee Woods more people are appreciating the effort it takes to keep a trail like this going. I’m pleased to see those new faces and hopefully with their help we’ll have the finish work completed on that trail and be able to open it up soon!
