Stonewall Falls with Gainesville Sorba, Sunday, September 12, 2010

Join the Gainesville Sorba chapter for a group ride to Stonewall Falls and White Twister trails in Rabun County. These two trails total about 15 miles. Stonewall is about 11 miles and White Twister is about 4.5 miles. Along the way we will visit the Falls on Stonewall Creek. The trail crosses the creek several times so you can test your water skills. This is a medium difficulty ride with plenty of climbing. Pack a lunch for the trail. Bring a chair and after the ride we can return to the Falls for chips and salsa.

Meet at the YMCA off of I-985 in Gainesville at 9:30a.m Sunday September 12 or at the trailhead between 10:30-10:45 a.m.

Directions to the YMCA: Travel north of Gainesville on I-985. The Y is on the left about one mile north of Jesse Jewell Parkway exit.

September Chapter Meeting / Ride – Wed. September 1st at 6:30 PM

Our September Gainesville SORBA Chapter meeting will be another Meet and Ride. Meet at the Chicopee MTB Trailhead at 6:30 PM and we’ll have a short meeting then ride the trails. Afterwards we’ll go to El Sombrero for dinner.

In case the trails are closed we’ll meet at Elachee Nature Center down the road from the Chicopee MTB trails. Come join us and find out what’s going on and how you can get involved with Gainesville SORBA and the Chicopee Woods MTB trails!

August Chapter Ride at Unicoi State Park Trails – Saturday, August 14th!

Join Gainesville SORBA for our August chapter ride at the Unicoi State Park Mountain Bike Trails. We’ll meet at the Oakwood Park and Ride lot at Hwy 53 and I-985 at 8:30 AM on Saturday, August 14th or meet us at the trailhead at Unicoi at 9:45 AM.

We had a good turnout despite the cold weather and collected well over 200 items and $25 that were donated to the Georgia Mountain Food Bank.

Night Rides starting up at Chicopee Woods MTB Trails!

Charge up your lights – It’s night riding season! Night rides start up Thursday, November 5th, 2009 at Chicopee Woods MTB trails! We’ll meet at the main MTB trail parking lot at 6:30 PM sharp.

Please Note: Night riding at Chicopee is only allowed during sanctioned group rides. Anyone caught riding at Chicopee after dark is in violation of Gainesville City laws and also puts sanctioned night rides in jeopardy for the rest of us.

National Public Lands Day – Flying Squirrel Grand Opening – 9/27/08

Thanks for everyone that came out to the grand opening of the new Flying Squirrel trail at Chicopee! We had a big group ride out to the Flying Squirrel where we had a ribbon cutting then rode the trail. In the middle of the trail we ran into a black snake trying to have a chipmonk for lunch! Back at the tail head we grilled some hot dogs and hung out for awhile. Thanks to Eric and Sandy Watson and Deli Provisions of Northeast Georgia for donating the hot dogs.

Come out and join Gainesville SORBA as we celebrate Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day!Â If you have a kid that can ride a bike, bring em on out to Chicopee on Saturday, October 4th at 10:00 AM.Â We’ll have group rides for all abilities plus water, snacks and a SWAG drawing for some cool stuff.

TANASI CAMP & RIDE 07/18-20/08

The group camping trip went great! We set up Fri. nite and had a great salmon dinner. It was a comfy 67 degrees and all slept well by the fire. Woke to hot coffee, sausage, bacon, eggs, pancakes, then rode Bear Claw cw, River loop cw, where we picked wild blueberries,and quartz loop cw as well where we found a blackberry patch and ate and even brought some back some for the pancakes Sun. morn.We finished blasting down Thunder Rock Express, had lunch then headed a few miles down river and up to Chilhowee. Talk about rocks as well as every other terrain that can be encountered. Hiked to the cool waterfall then back on the bikes. Johnny and Norma headed down to Bear Creek/Pinhoti Sun morn. and Steve, Robi and I rode Tanasi again only in the opposite direction, all backwards except Thunder Rock that is. Going down T.R. is the best ten minutes of your life with your clothes on. We gathered maps and pics to use as models for Chicopee as this is one of the best trail systems we’ve ever seen.

AFTERMATH! Work Party & Ride Sat. Jan 12th

We had a small but industrious group at the work party today. We managed to finish up the Beginner Trail. This means we’ll be closing the bottom of Rocky Way soon! Lunch at Barberito’s then we rode out and checked out some of the new advanced trail.

On the ride back Robbie almost hits a deer! Two doe moved off the trail but didn’t run off. We all stopped and watched as they contently foraged. One was probably no more than 25′ from us. The other was a little more apprehensive and kept her distance. It was a nice end to a long day! Continue on for pictures!

Winding Stair Ride Pics

We had a great ride up and around Winding Stair Gap! Don’s Florida bunch finally got some mountain riding in. The much needed rain kept us off the single track and the weather was chillyÂ but the sun came out and all had a good time!We put in 23 miles climbing the fireroads and enjoying the great mountain views.At the top we ran into several SORBA racers riding in Cartecay Bikes chili cook-off including our very own Johnny and Norma. David Blalock led us most of the way on his new Independant 29′er…sweet ride!
